12th Division saw action on the Somme in early July, 1916, at Ovillers and again in mid August near Pozières. After that they moved north, away from the battlefield to the much quieter trenches around Riviere and Wailly, just to the south of Arras. 7th East Surrey of 37 Brigade moved into brigade reserve in Riviere on 21st August, the day Henry Pullenger was killed in action. The Battalion Diary has no mention of any casualties on this day but that is not to say that artillery fire, always a present danger along the whole line, was not responsible, as indeed it most likely was. |
